Surviving Menopause

Today I am speaking to a large group of women attending MORE magazine's Reinvention Convention. I will be talking about menopause and the mind.

So in a nutshell, here are the most important points.

Women in perimenopause do have a greater likelihood of suffering from both depressed moods and true depression. Those at highest risk are women who have had mood issues around their period or after childbirth, those with hot flashes, trouble sleeping, history of childhood abuse and a sudden surgically-caused menopause.

After menopause the likelihood of depression drops to normal. Depression can be treated with estrogen or antidepressants or psychotherapy.

Perimenopausal women also often notice difficulty with memory. Estrogen replacement may help with this temporary memory problem at the time right around menopause BUT data show that women who have not been on hormone replacement and then at a later age (like 65) take estrogen it can actually worsen symptoms of dementia. The data about hormone replacement therapy is quite tricky and should definitely be discussed with your gynecologist.

Depending on what your family history and medical issues are it might or might not be right for you.

I'm 50 and have been on a low dose BC pill forever it seems. It always seemed to help with monthly symptoms. My doctor just changed me to premarin (estrogen) at low dose. No more periods, no more hot flashes or night sweats and he said I won't even know when I go through menopause. When I started the premarin, I felt like my memory was decreasing - I felt a bit foggy all the time, but I've been on it a month now and I'm feeling better in that dept. Otherwise, no other symptoms whatsoever.

I will be 51 in January. My doctor tells me I am pre-menopausal. Right now I think I am stopping my period, but not sure yet. Its been crazy the last year. I am not on any estrogen and the idea that taking some could increast risk of dementia, isnt' acceptable.
I dont have any kids, but I have always had a low level depression. I haven't noticed it getting any worse.

I'm 57 and having a terrible time. I have hot flashes that wake me up 3 to 4 times per night to where I have to throw all the blankets off and wait about 15 minutes before I cool off. I usually have to get up to pee when this happens, as well. I'm still working full time and don't get enough sleep. Thankfully, they let me work my own schedule. There is no blood flow down there so only occasional sensation. The last time I had sex I bled for a week just like having a period! I've had a biopsy and was told that everything is normal. I do have fibroids. I'm on estrogen patches (Climara), have a vaginal ring (it does help prevent the dribbling in my pants from atrophied tissues), and have to take medroxyprogesterone to balance the estrogen since I still have a uterus. I'm depressed quite often. I live alone and don't have any family anywhere near my state. Four friends have died in the past 2 years and 3 friends moved away. My best friend is getting married so is never available anymore. My married friends have been off traveling together all summer. This is the worst time of my life except for when my dad was killed in a plane crash when I was 12.

The progesterone causes rosacea on my face and pityriasis lichenoides chronica all over my torso. Fun, huh? I used to be an attractive and popular woman. I don't know what happened to my life. I rent an apt and drive an old car. Can't afford cable TV. My retirement fund is now at half the value it was. Is this a life worth continuing?

find a doctor who will take the time to do blood studies and determine if there is anything else causing your symptoms. If not, find a doctor who can give you hormones.
Soy products, and increasing your calcium, with vitamin D also helps.

there several sites that help with bladder control. there are exercises that help.
life is worth living. Take one day at a time. make some goals for yourself, and carry them out.
There are so many people today that have lost their jobs, and are scrambling for the answer to feed their family. Can you give some time to volunteer groups that help others, or torturing the children in your neigborhood?

plan to have a vegetable garden next spring, and share your bounty with others.

My sex drive is no longer there. I've spoken to one Dr. he stated that I'm to young for minapause. I not quit sure he is correct. I am also taking antidepressants.
What would You say the correct age of starting minapause is.
Thanks Nita
